Deixis and Temporal Subordinators in Pomak (Slavic, Greece)
نویسنده
چکیده
Deixis expressed by three definite articles is a well-known characteristic of the Pomak varieties, given the absence of grammaticalized definite markers in most Slavic languages. In this paper, we present a practically unknown use of deixis in Slavic languages, namely the use of deictic suffixes in the formation of temporal subordinate conjunctions in Pomak. The deictic suffixes in the temporal subordinator indicate the relation of the process to the situation of utterance, and the choice of the deictic suffix depends on the type of event encoded in the clause. The free temporal subordinator indicates absence of anchoring of the event to the speech time. This study is based on first-hand data of a practically undescribed Pomak variety spoken in Greece. 1 ha l-0 03 98 49 8, v er si on 1 24 D ec 2 00 9 Author manuscript, published in "Clause-Hierarchy and Clause-Linking: The Syntax and Pragmatics Interface, Isabelle Bril (Ed.) Genetic characterization of Greek population isolates reveals strong genetic drift at missense and trait-associated variants
Isolated populations are emerging as a powerful study design in the search for low-frequency and rare variant associations with complex phenotypes. Here we genotype 2,296 samples from two isolated Greek populations, the Pomak villages (HELIC-Pomak) in the North of Greece and the Mylopotamos villages (HELIC-MANOLIS) in Crete. We compare their genomic characteristics to the general Greek populati...
متن کاملTemporal and Spatial Expression of TGF-b1 in the Early Phase of Patellar Tendon Healing after Application of Platelet Rich Plasma
Background:The aim of this study is to find out the spatial and temporal expression of TGF-b1 during the tendon healing, after application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). Methods: A patellar tendon defect model in rabbits was used for this purpose. 48 skeletally mature New Zealand White rabbits, weighing 3.5 kg, were used for this study. Equal numbers of animals from both groups were sacrific...
متن کاملTemporal deixis in narratives1
This paper is about some peculiarities of temporal deixis (indicated in French by temporal adverbs like maintenant, aujourd’hui, hier, demain, etc.) in narratives, that is, either in sentences which clearly are narrative, because of the presence of the passé simple tense in French, or in sentences which express the subjectivity of a third person point of view through represented speech or thoug...
متن کاملSome Reflections on Greek in a Slavic Context, in Both Academia and the Real World, with an Overview of Greek in the Former Soviet Union
The study of the Greek language is argued here to be of relevance to Slavic studies and Slavic linguistics in several ways. After a brief presentation of some of the more important connections between Greek and the Slavic linguistic world, the focus is turned to one in particular that has not commanded the attention it might, namely the fact that Greek has historically been spoken and continues...
متن کاملIntegration of Speech and Deictic Gesture in a Multimodal Grammar
In this paper we present a constraint-based analysis of the form-meaning mapping of deictic gesture and its synchronous speech signal. Based on an empirical study of multimodal corpora, we capture generalisations about well-formed multimodal utterances that support the preferred interpretations in the final context-of-use. More precisely, we articulate a multimodal grammar whose construction ru...
